Built to house the archaeological museum of the province of Almería in 1933, the building has undergone a series of major refurbishments over the years. After its last refurbishment, it was officially re-opened in 2006 by Prince Felipe and Princess Leticia of Asturias. It is a compact building with an exterior that has almost no apertures, but the interior is flooded with light and has a large empty space that connects all the different exhibition areas.


The museum is a prime example of architectural minimalism. It is only at the very top that some glass and metal skylights were fitted in the roof to break the linear feel of the building. They are raised, so as to provide better light distribution. Inside, above the foyer, you’ll find the Nube Siret (Siret Cloud), a homage to Luis Siret, widely thought of as the father of prehistoric archaeology in Almería.

The museum’s collection is distributed over three floors. On the first and second floors, you’ll find the permanent exhibition on early hunter-gatherer societies, “The society of Los Millares” and the exhibition on the “The Society of El Argar”. They both include the tools used for everyday tasks, skins, awls, flint utensils, jewellery, idols, etc. Visitors can also go on a symbolic journey back in time, with walls that gradually ascend to represent the man-made terraces on which the houses of the Fuente Álamo archaeological site were built, with tombs and numerous fascinating artefacts. The third floor is dedicated to the Roman and Andalusi civilizations.

As well as these permanent exhibitions, the museum has an area for temporary exhibitions on the third floor.

The museum is open to the public from 9 am to 8.30 pm, Tuesday to Saturday, and from 9 am to 3.30 pm on Sundays and public holidays.
